BitClip is an audio processing plugin designed for flexible operation either as a standalone application or within AU-compatible host environments such as Logic Pro or GarageBand.

Overview

This plugin integrates bit-crushing with soft-clipping to produce a range of lo-fi distortion effects. From subtle, vintage-style degradation to more aggressive diode-emulated distortion, BitClip offers a broad spectrum of sonic textures while maintaining minimal CPU usage. In "Warm" mode, the DSP is calibrated to emulate the tonal characteristics of classic hardware units rather than merely performing basic bit reduction, resulting in high-frequency attenuation typically associated with vintage equipment. Both effects work synergistically to evoke the character of outdated samplers and drum machines, particularly when current recordings are too pristine.

Parameters

• Active – Toggles the processing on or off, effectively bypassing the effect. In Warm mode, the processing introduces a vintage character with specific high-frequency attenuation reminiscent of hardware units; this is not equivalent to a simple low-pass filter. Bright mode bypasses Warm's tonal coloration without affecting the signal path.
• Out – Adjusts the output level of the processed signal, allowing for volume compensation or creative blending. For instance, increasing gain before the clipper and reducing the Out level can manage the overall impact within a mix while preventing dominance.
• Crush – Enables or disables bit-crushing.
• Depth – Sets the bit-depth for crushing, ranging from 16-bit down to 4-bit in 1-bit increments. Unlike vintage hardware that often operated at fixed bit depths such as 8 or 12 bits, BitClip permits exploration into intermediate values—such as 5 bits—for nuanced sonic alterations that balance clarity and crunchiness.
• Clip – Toggles soft-clipping on or off, allowing for additional transient shaping and distortion.
• Gain – Controls the input gain to the soft-clipper. Although lower gain settings may produce subtle effects, higher levels can push signals into pronounced diode-like distortion. With up to 48dB of gain available, BitClip is capable of driving signals into aggressive saturation.
